In early October a nearby river sent torrents of water and mud through the town, near prosperous Antigua, and destroyed several homes after rains associated with Hurricane Stan inundated parts of Central America. Torrential rains and mudslides killed or made missing thousands of Guatemalans in early October.<br />

  • Chief Donald Grégory William uses his air-conditioned car as an office at the Port-au-Prince, Haiti fire station. The building was heavily damaged in the January 12 earthquake and has been deemed uninhabitable and marked for demolition, though no one can say when that may be. William says he spends as little time as necessary inside the structure, as he doesn't trust it. There are no plans yet for relocation. A few dozen under-equipped firefighters are tasked with providing fire service to a damaged city of over two million people.

  • People on the McDonough Ghost Tour walk near a cross on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006 said to be placed in remembrance of a teen who was killed in a train-versus-car accident. Nearby, dozens of people died in 1900 in another train accident. The tour visits four areas near the downtown square that some people say are sights of paranormal activity. Leslie Chrysler, director of the McDonough Hospitality and Tourism Bureau, and local man John Quinn offer tours in the spirit of those in Savannah.

Traffic was stymied here for weeks until road crews could construct a makeshift road in place of one that was washed out when the swollen river overran its banks and altered this area's landscape in early October. Torrential rains associated with Hurricane Stan inundated parts of Central America in early October, causing flooding, mudslides and death across western Guatemala. Many areas have been cut off due to washed out roads and bridges.<br />
