Raymond Clarkchecks the measurements of a wheel on a rehabilitated rail car at the MARTA Avondale Yard in Decatur, Ga. on Tuesday, July 11, 2006. Joe J. Erves, MARTA'S chief engineer of railcar rehabilitation and reliability, said the rail cars have a useful life of about 30 years, broken down in two 15-year segments with a "mid-life overhaul" in between. The wheels, he added, are good for about 250,000 miles or three years.
